Chicago Record-breaking storms last week in Chicago saw an astounding 27 tornadoes recorded in the city and suburbs in a single day.

The National Weather Service reports that following the storm on July 15, tornado tracks were discovered in Grant Park, Chicago Lawn, West Englewood, West Town, and the Near West Side. Officials stated that when workers go through “hundreds of damage points,” more could be added to the total.

However, the most tornadoes in a single day in the area is already 27. The previous record, according to Bill Snyder, a longtime WGN weather producer for retired meteorologist Tom Skilling, was 22 tornadoes, which were recorded on June 30, 2014, and again on March 31, 2023.

The massive weather event upended cars, destroyed trees, and sent furniture flying off rooftop decks.

Although the South Side was also hit by two tornadoes on July 14, Snyder claimed that the storms on July 15 were the most serious and “historic” of the previous string of stormy days.

According to meteorologist Eric Lenning, the weather service dispatched six teams in the last week to examine the damage and measure wind speeds from the storms on July 15 in order to verify and classify the tornadoes.

According to Lenning, there was a line of thunderstorms, and occasionally there are small tornado spin-ups along that line. That night, there was a great deal of instability and extreme humidity, making breathing nearly impossible. Additionally, the winds were favorable for sustaining tornadoes.
