According to ESPNโs Chris Low, the redshirt sophomore is projected to start Saturdayโs season opener against Middle Tennessee State after receiving the majority of first-team reps during preseason workouts, ahead of Tyler Buchner, Ty Simpson, and Dylan Lonergan.
This weekโs release of Alabamaโs official Week 1 depth chart was highly anticipated since it would provide light on the quarterback position.
Saban told reporters on Monday that he would not release a depth chart.
It causes a lot of distractions for our squad,โ Saban stated. โCreates a lot of guys thinking โWell this guy won the job, now Iโm not gonna get to play,โ or whatever and quite frankly, we donโt need that.โ
This happened after Saban criticized people for making too much of depth charts following Alabamaโs season-opening victory over Utah State last year.
During his radio broadcast on Thursday (h/t Nick Kelly of the Tuscaloosa News), Saban stated that he told the quarterbacks who will start the game and that they want him โto play well enough so we have an opportunity to play all the guys at the position because thatโs important for us.โ
Milroe is the most experienced with
Simpson, who was also part of Alabamaโs 2021 recruiting class, played in four games last season. Dylan Lonergan is a four-star prospect and the No. 16 overall quarterback in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports.
Buchner transferred to Alabama in April after spending the previous two seasons at Notre Dame. The 20-year-old was the Fighting Irishโs starting quarterback to begin the 2022 season, but a shoulder injury sustained in the second game sidelined him until the Gator
