Sad News: Josh Heupel made his final decision to return his previous Team Oklahoma…
During SEC Media Days in Dallas, Texas, Josh Heupel gave a speech to the media covering a wide range of topics, including recruiting and the brand and culture of Tennessee. But there was one question that Heupel was frequently asked that felt a little strange.
Heupel’s ties to Oklahoma are well known. In 2000, he finished second in the Heisman Trophy race and led the Sooners to their most recent National Championship victory. There are now concerns about his return because Oklahoma is now a part of the SEC and the Volunteers are coming to Norman this season.
One question might have been enough, but Heupel was questioned about his return several times, and two of the three players he brought were questioned about it as well. As Heupel responded
a lot of questions, it just seems weird that some reporters were focused more on his return to Oklahoma than Tennessee football.
Heupel acknowledged that returning home may bring back memories and feelings and that he may even get to visit some former teammates, but in the end, the trip is strictly business-related. Heupel and the Volunteers have one goal in mind, and that is to return to Tennessee with victory.
Reminiscences and memories are wonderful, and Oklahoma obviously values that 2000 victory greatly since it was their most recent national championship—but that was 25 years ago. The other matters will have to wait since Tennessee is here to finish the job.
Heupel did discuss how, after spending so much time on the other side of the field, it will be different.
Saturdays on the home sideline and being cheered for every week. He respects the University and is excited to see the two brands come together in a game, especially with his history with Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables.
The question was smart to ask, but it just seemed odd to ask it so many times. There is only so much the guy can say about being excited to return to Norman.
