News Now: Debby is predicted to strengthen into a hurricane tonight; the SC coast may experience historic flooding….

Slowly moves over Georgia and South Carolina this week

FOX Carolina’s Greenville, South Carolina On Sunday night, Tropical Storm Debby is predicted to intensify into a hurricane. The storm this week has a good chance of causing unprecedented floods along the coast of South Carolina.

Before making landfall in Florida, Debby intensifies into a hurricane.
Track is quite erratic starting on Monday.

Whatever its course, South Carolina is expected to see significant rainfall. Debbie is expected to intensify into a hurricane on Sunday night as it gets closer to the Florida coast. It is most likely to land on Monday midday in the Florida Big Bend. From there, it passes over South Georgia and weakens once again to a tropical storm.
The models are having trouble determining which way the system will track—east or west—so there is still a lot of uncertainty in the anticipated trajectory. Before it goes back onshore in South Carolina, a further eastward trajectory would take it out into the Atlantic Ocean, where the warm seas may allow for some strengthening. A weakened system results from the storm continuing on its westward trajectory. However, the Upstate would also be more severely impacted by it.

We have a warning for perhaps heavy rainfall in the Upstate. It is suspended from the system’s track. We should expect more of the intense downpours if Debby moves further west, primarily from Tuesday through Thursday. We will have less rain and more dry weather if the storm moves further east. The good news is that since we are located on the storm’s western flank, where severe weather is less common, the main hazard to us would be excessive rain.
