Heartbreaking News: head coach of Tennessee women’s basketball Kim Caldwell collapsed at the lady Vols training camp, according to the story…
After spending a year at Furman, where she recorded a 9-11 dual-match singles record and was ranked second in the Paladins’ 2024 lineup, Thornton has transferred to the Lady Vols. She competed with several partners and won 11 matches in doubles, spending a lot of time playing with Grace Thomas. Together, the pair went unbeaten, compiling a 9-0 record while mostly playing at Furman’s third position.
Tennisrecruiting.net regarded Thornton as a blue chip recruit before she entered college. She was ranked as high as 22 nationally and as the top player in Tennessee. She won two individual singles state titles and guided Knoxville Catholic to two state crowns. Thornton, the 2019 Tennessee Player of the Year, won the Southern singles titles in 12s, 14s, 16s, and 18s as well as the doubles title in 18s. At the age of 14, she won gold in doubles at the indoor nationals.
Thornton joins Vanesa Suarez, Natalia Perez, Conley Raidt, Brooklyn Schafer, and Saray Yli-Piipari as the sixth official signee for Tennessee’s 2024 recruiting class.
