Tropical Storm Ernesto forms in the Atlantic

With the 5 p.m. Monday update, the National Hurricane Center dubbed Tropical Storm Ernesto. This is the hurricane season of 2024’s sixth named storm.

Ernesto was approximately 295 miles east southeast of Antigua and 590 miles east southeast of San Juan at 5 p.m., according to the National Hurricane Center. The tropical storm was traveling 28 miles per hour in a west-northwest direction with sustained winds of 40 mph.

According to the forecast track, the disturbance is predicted to approach the United States and the British Virgin Islands on Tuesday evening after moving across parts of the Leeward Islands late on Monday night.

Denis Phillips, the chief meteorologist, stated that the system “may develop into a major hurricane as it moves north of Puerto Rico.”
