Vols Running Backs Develop and Change During Training

Small and Wright Back to Lead Explosive Running Back Group - University of Tennessee Athletics

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – On Wednesday, Tennessee began practice number eleven of its preseason training camp, with an emphasis on the running back room of the Vols. As the 2024 season draws closer, running backs coach Sims met with local reporters to talk about the group’s development.

A diverse collection of players, Sims demonstrated their comprehension and aptitude during the passing game.

“They’ve done a good job in terms of taking the opportunities that they’re given on the perimeter when we’re able to get the ball in their hands,” Sims stated. “All of them bring a different skill set from that aspect, but all of them have reliable hands to where we’re able to put the ball in their hands on the perimeter.”

Sims also gave his team credit for being willing to carry out the grunt work involved in pass protection.

“In general, I believe that it’s something you can always improve upon because occasionally, guys know who to target and they approach so violently that it resembles a bull in a china shop mindset. However, they’ve done an excellent job of keeping the quarterback upright by poking their faces inside.”
