The former Wales rugby player has been making an impression in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, but an injury could now endanger his chances of being included on the team for the upcoming campaign.

The likelihood of Louis Rees-Zammit breaking into the NFL has decreased.

Due to a back ailment, the former Wales rugby player has been unable to practice with the Kansas City Chiefs, and his availability for this weekend’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions is now in question.

Rees-Zammit might suffer a severe setback in his attempt to reach the 53-man roster of the Chiefs; he needs to perform well on every play to earn a spot on the squad this season. After Sunday, the Chiefs will play just one more preseason game. This Friday’s game against the Chicago Bears will be the team’s last chance to try out.

The news was disclosed by Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who informed reporters that his players needed to improve their kick returns because of new regulations and errors made in their first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. One of the main responsibilities Rees-Zammit is supposed to have is this one.

“We just need to get more reps out there and make sure that it’s clear what the rules are; obviously, we made a mistake in the game,” Toub said. “Even though it ultimately cost us, we learned a lot from it.

“Those are going to be the same guys you saw. I still want to see guys, though. Louis Rees-Zammit, who I want to see, didn’t practice today.
