Wind Update: Strong winds predicted for this weekend could affect traffic on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Drivers in Auckland are advised to exercise particular caution on the Auckland Harbour Bridge tomorrow (Sunday, August 18) due to the prediction of severe winds around the city.
The bridge may have lower speed limits and lane closures in the event that wind gusts surpass certain thresholds in order to maintain public safety.
Strong wind gusts are predicted for Sunday afternoon between one and four p.m., with the potential to close all lanes on the bridge. These gusts are predicted to occur tonight and tomorrow morning.
On the freeway, drivers are required to observe electronic message boards and drive according to the conditions. These will indicate whether there are any speed restrictions, lane closures, or complete closures (based on wind thresholds).
If bad, motorcyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles should stay off the Auckland Harbour Bridge and take State Highways 16 and 18 as the western ring route instead.
In order to keep an eye on conditions and make sure that decisions are based on reliable and up-to-date information about present and forecast wind speeds, NZTA/Waka Kotahi will continue to collaborate closely with Metservice.
Before departing, drivers are urged to check the weather and road conditions:
