Jayden Daniels of the Commanders Says He’s “Still Learning” After Dolphins Mistake

Jayden Daniels, the quarterback for the Washington Commanders, acknowledges that he made a mistake but says he’s still learning when to run and when to go to ground or look for cover along the sideline. The problem arose during Week 2 of the NFL preseason in 2024 when Daniels scrambled for 13 yards against the Miami Dolphins.

Daniels declined to hit the sideline or hit the deck. Instead, he was hit, as reported by Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. This made head coach Dan Quinn appear clearly irritated and reminded his prospective franchise quarterback to keep himself safe.

Even though the conversation between the coach and the player was amicable overall, Quinn will understand how critical it is that Daniels refrain from taking unwarranted shots. The second-overall selection in this year’s draft is still learning the art of discretion.

On Saturday, August 17, after the Commanders were defeated 13–6, Daniels talked with media. “There’s a battle going on between me and him (Quinn),” he declared. According to JP Finlay of NBC4 Sports, there’s a thin line between knowing when to take a chance and when to give up.

The Heisman Trophy winner was then asked by Finlay how he’ll strike the right balance once the games matter. He replied, “still learning. God blessed me with a gift, I don’t want to take that away. I know that they don’t want it to be taken away.”
