Former first-round picks of the Flyers are placed on unconditional waivers for contract termination.
The Flyers declared that Ryan Johansen, their center, has had his contract terminated due to a “material breach,” and he has been placed on unconditional waivers. After being fired, Johansen is anticipated to clear waivers and file a grievance with the NHLPA, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
Before the trade deadline, Philadelphia acquired Johansen from the Avalanche, taking on his reduced $4 million budget charge in exchange for the trade that sent defenseman Sean Walker to Colorado.
It was evident right away that Johansen was never supposed to play for the Flyers. Following the transaction, the Flyers swiftly waived Johansen in an effort to assign him to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL and maybe flip him before the deadline. However, no one was interested, and a few days later, the league revoked Johansen’s assignment to the AHL when he failed his medical due to a persistent hip issue.
Due to Johansen’s injury, the Flyers were somewhat inconvenienced by their salary cap situation in June as they were unable to buy him out. That will be resolved on Wednesday after he clears waivers, and Philly’s records will be temporarily cleared of his $4 million cap charge following his termination.
