NEW ORLEANS — In lieu of seasoned quarterback Derek Carr, rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler of the Saints presented a strong argument.

Samson Nacua, a receiver, had a memorable special teams performance that raised his profile, but it ended in a way he will always regret.

In a 30-27 preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Rattler led four scoring drives for a total of 24 points and completed one touchdown throw.

“I think I’ve made the necessary progress,” Rattler, a South Carolina native selected in the fifth round of the draft, stated. “You know that I work here? I’m fresh. I’ve never done this before. My only goals are to help the team and get stronger.”

Reserve quarterback Malik Willis of the Titans found Bryce Oliver for two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. With 1:25 remaining on a fourth-and-1 play from the New Orleans 5-yard line, Willis’ pass helped the Titans (3-0) come back.

The brother of Rams wide receiver Puca Nacua, Nacua returned a failed field goal 106 yards until Thomas Odukoya, a native of the Netherlands, forced him out of bounds at the Tennessee 3-yard line with one minute remaining in the first half.

“Going sideways made it feel like an extra 60 yards because I got to that 50-yard line and I was like, ‘My legs are gone,'” Nacua recalled.

“Probably going to tell me I am the slower brother and I’m going to be sick because I know I’m faster than Puca,” he remarked, referring to his family and friends.

Despite the thrilling comeback yielding just one point, Nacua’s prospects of making it past Tuesdayโ€”the deadline for teams to reduce their rosters from ninety players to the regular seasonโ€”may be enhanced.
