The inspiration for Tennessee football’s newest Smokey Grey series jersey, “The Volunteer State,” came from the classic Tennessee Tri-Star state logo for the first time in the program’s history.
The second design of the new Smokey Grey series, “The Volunteer State” uniform pays homage to the state and Tennessee’s standing as the flagship university. It will be worn on August 31 for the Vols’ home opener against in-state rival Chattanooga. Tennessee declared in 2022 that it would collaborate with Nike to produce a fresh Smokey Grey uniform for each season starting in 2023 and running at least until 2025.
The iconic VFL player Condredge Holloway, the first Black quarterback to start for the Vols, was honored last year when the team wore the “Artful Dodger” uniforms.
The 2024 Smokey Grey series concept has two firsts. For the first time, “Tennessee” will be boldly displayed beneath the Power T across the breast of a home-game shirt. Furthermore, the Tri-Star state emblem is visible on the upper part of the jeans, and the Tri-Star logo is displayed on the shoulder. The distinctive pant design also includes the white stripe of the Tennessee state flag and the three stars.
The West, Middle, and East grand divisions of Tennessee are represented by the three white stars that make up the emblem. They form an inseparable triad, joined together by the white circle.
The helmets honor Tennessee’s well-known Great Smoky Mountains National Park with a greyscale mountain pattern and the iconic orange Power T.
