Nick Saban: “We haven't taken a step back” - Alabama QB Jalen Milroe discusses transition from Nick Saban to Kalen DeBoer's coaching style

For the Alabama football team, Saturday marked the beginning of the Kalen DeBoer era, and it was a huge success. For DeBoer’s debut game, the Crimson Tide hosted Western Kentucky, and it was never close. Alabama jumped out to a commanding lead in the first quarter with three consecutive touchdowns; they would go on to win 63-0. No issue, Nick Saban.

It goes without saying that Alabama football’s opponents this season will be more difficult to beat than Western Kentucky, but the fact that the Crimson Tide handled business as they did is encouraging.

Clearly, DeBoer does a lot of things differently than Nick Saban. Quarterback Jalen Milroe likened one aspect of his offense—the way he varies it—to DeBoer’s method of varying his musical selections.

When asked if things were different under DeBoer than under Nick Saban, Jalen Milroe responded, “Yeah, a little different,” according to an ESPN article. “I always make fun of Coach [DeBoer] for the songs that are on his daily music playlist. In the same way as his offensive, he muddles it up.

On Saturday, DeBoer’s offensive strategy seemed to be working. The Crimson Tide scored points and moved the ball with ease.

In particular, Alabama had a successful day in the run game. When necessary, Jalen Milroe can make tremendous airborne plays, but his running threat is a major component of his skill set. Even though he completed nine passes for 100 yards on Saturday, the Crimson Tide managed to score sixty-three points, with Milroe recording three throwing touchdowns. And he scored two touchdowns on runs. The offensive had a fantastic outing overall.
