It’s unlikely that Nick Saban will quickly forget his tenure as the football coach at Alabama. in particular, the brief experience he experienced on January 8, 2018.

Speaking Thursday at the University of Alabama Board of Trustees meeting, Saban brought up the 2017 season’s national championship game versus Georgia.

In the game, I also experienced the most horrifying shift from “this could never happen” to “highest feeling of success” when Tua (Tagovailoa) is fired in overtime in 2017,” according to Saban. “I shatter the headset. He’s getting my yell. We won the game before I had a chance to stop screaming at him for that play.
With a game-winning touchdown from Tagovailoa off of DeVonta Smith in overtime, Alabama won Saban’s fifth national championship.

When the Crimson Tide take on South Florida on Saturday, the field will be formally dedicated to Saban, who announced his retirement in January. Before the weekend, the resolution renaming Bryant-Denny Stadium’s playing field “Saban Field” was formally adopted by the board of trustees.

The former Alabama coach spoke after it was approved and the trustees posed for a picture with the Sabans.

“The 17 years I spent coaching Alabama are some of the best memories I’ve ever had,” Saban remarked. “Perhaps the greatest chance anyone could ever have.”
