Ryan Williams, Alabama’s outstanding rookie wide receiver, has shown off his skills in the team’s first two games. The youngest player on the field, a 17-year-old freshman who reclassified to the 2024 recruiting class, has had an immediate impact on the Crimson Tide’s attack under head coach Kalen DeBoer despite his advanced age. With the Crimson Tide, Williams has accumulated six receptions for 207 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games. Jalen Milroe found Williams wide open for an 84-yard reception that marked his first score after Williams broke through Western Kentucky’s defense. Experts are noticing Williams’ remarkable play so far this season, and his talent is sweeping the country.
“He is unique,” Luginbill remarked. “And for his age, he exhibits unbelievable maturity. I know we talked about it last week, and I brought up Amari Cooper. The reason for that was that Cooper was a route runner who was so far ahead of the curve in college, knowing the subtleties of how to attack leverage, alignment, cushion, get open, and separate. He simply had an innate talent for it. In that sense, Ryan Williams is similar to Amari. “I promise you when opposing teams are breaking down tape and Alabama breaks the huddle, you better figure out where he’s at,” Luginbill concluded. “Defenses don’t have to deal with many freshman wide receivers in college football.”
