What DC in Alabama Kane Wommack referred to the USF game as “absolutely unacceptable.”
Following the USF game on Monday, Alabama football defensive coordinator Kane Wommack provided a comprehensive evaluation of the defense. He gave certain things high marks. He discussed those that irritated him. One thing in particular incited more anger than the rest.
“We were unable to create enough takeaways,” Wommack said, adding that he was “extremely disappointed.” “Their group did. They produced three of them. The turnover margin for us was minus three, which is completely unacceptable from a defensive standpoint.
Thanks to two interceptions by Keon Sabb in the first quarter of their game against Western Kentucky the week before, Alabama (2-0) was able to collect two points.
“We need to dedicate ourselves to it every single day,” Wommack stated. It’s what we advocate. We are that way. That’s our core conviction. It was absent from this game. We need to keep applying pressure, staying focused, and pushing to finish it by game day.
Alabama won the game 42–16 against South Florida, but the absence of takeaways did not cost them the match. However, a takeaway would have been beneficial when the game was close late in the fourth quarter.
Wommack expressed disappointment about the quantity of big runs Alabama allowed. He did, however, commend his defense for a number of other accomplishments, such as forcing stops on crucial downs and limiting South Florida to field goal attempts on the majority of red zone visits.
From a defensive perspective, Wommack stated, “I thought we showed up in some critical moments in the game, which was encouraging to see.” “A few younger players also made an impact during those times. Our defense’s leadership, in my opinion, was evident both on the sidelines and on the field. In the game, we had eight 3-and-outs. Thirteen of them were considered “game-changers.” I’ve also discussed those points with you people.
