Breaking News: former Alabama five-star has finally become a defensive enforcer in 2024
He was a five-star recruit when he joined the University of Alabama in the 2022 recruiting class, but the native of New Jersey is now a defensive force on defense for the Crimson Tide.
After two games, junior inside linebacker Jihaad Campbell leads the Tide in both total tackles (20) and solo tackles (14).
Against South Florida and Western Kentucky, he created multiple plays by flying all over the field. Although Campbell almost produced an interception against the Bulls, he is supporting a defense that has given up only one touchdown this year. With 2.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, and a pass breakup, Campbell leads Alabama’s defense, which has given up eight points per game. Byrum Brown, the quarterback for South Florida, had success rushing the football, but in the Tide’s 42-16 triumph, Campbell racked up 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, and a breakup. He approaches everything with the intention of dominating, and Kane Wommack adores that.
But from a linebacker position, he plays the game like it should be played. He pursues the ball with unwavering determination. We often discuss effort and finishing, and he plays with a very strong motor, lots of juice, and enthusiasm. He personifies the four to six seconds it takes to go from point A to point B with the aim of using violence when we get there. His effort level is something I am proud of, and I believe it directly contributed to him leading our team in tackles through two games.
On Saturday, Campbell will go to Camp Randall Stadium to play Wisconsin, bringing his enforcer mindset with him.
