Kalen DeBoer confirms suspension of Alabama LB for Wisconsin game after targeting call - Touchdown Alabama - Alabama Football

McLelland, William – USA Today Sports
Though he is regarded by Kane Wommack as one of Alabama’s three inside linebacker starters, the Crimson Tide will be without him for the first part of their game on Saturday against Wisconsin.

A former junior college transfer named Justin Jefferson was reported for targeting during Alabama’s 42-16 triumph over South Florida at Bryant-Denny Stadium’s Saban Field last week. Fans of the Tide disagreed with the ruling because they thought Jefferson hit Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown with his shoulder rather than the top of his helmet. The officiating staff, however, had a different opinion. Jefferson will miss the first half of the game against the Badgers as per NCAA regulations after he was called for targeting.

During the SEC Coaches Teleconference on Wednesday, Kalen DeBoer confirmed Jefferson’s first-half suspension.

Every circumstance is unique, in my opinion, according to DeBoer.

It is terrible for a lot of these individuals, probably, because they are genuinely trying their hardest. They are not attempting to enter and do harm to anyone on purpose. Justin felt that way, I know. Regretfully, he satisfies the requirements and meets the desired criteria. That’s just part of the game, I suppose, and as supporters of football, we have to err on the side of safety. Enough has transpired during the game’s duration and history for us to have established certain guidelines in place. I know they are constantly being looked at and does not mean we can’t stop tweaking things a little bit here and there just to try to find that common ground, that scenario that seems best for all the situations because they definitely do not fall under one category.”
