An update on Jalen Milroe’s progress: the status of the standout quarterback and his potential to improve an offensively inept Alabama team

Although Alabama is 2-0 and has scored a lot of points, the offense is still struggling to find its flow. It has made assessing Jalen Milroe, the standout quarterback,’s development challenging.
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama: We have been wondering about Jalen Milroe’s future development all offseason. In his debut season as a starter, Alabama’s star quarterback placed sixth in the Heisman Trophy vote. How would he develop in a new offensive scheme and with a new coaching staff? We were aware that he could manufacture something out of nothing with his legs and make the big play, but how good was the rest of his game?
The possibilities were endless for him if he could improve just a little bit in terms of pocket management, progression management, and accuracy in the short-to-intermediate passing game.
However, the South Florida game was too chaotic to evaluate objectively. Due to a rearranged offensive line brought about by left tackle Kadyn Proctor’s injury, Milroe was subjected to a lot of pressure and occasionally hobbled when opponents dove at his feet. The running game’s ineffectiveness and the line’s penalties made things worse, placing Milroe and the offense in challenging second- and third-and-long situations.
Last Saturday, Milroe and head coach Kalen DeBoer convened on the sidelines in between the third and fourth quarters. According to Milroe, DeBoer’s lesson was one of attitude: maintain a 1-0 mindset and never give up hope; success will eventually materialize.
