ESPN Analyst Compares Ryan Williams to Former College Football Superstar

Former Alabama Football coach Nick Saban raved about 17-year-old freshman WR Ryan Williams on College Gameday in Columbia, comparing him to former Alabama great Amari Cooper.

After being the go-to wide receiver for a team that won a national title, Cooper had an outstanding first season at Alabama in 2012. He really took off in the second half of the season and finished with 1000 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Cooper, a future All-American and the fourth overall pick in the NFL draft, took some time to warm up, as he only had three receptions for 27 yards in his first two games with the Crimson Tide. Cooper didn’t start to shine until the fifth week of the season against Ole Miss, when he caught eight passes for 84 yards and two scores. He finally surpassed 100 yards receiving for the first time two weeks later, against Tennessee.

Williams needed just one game to surpass 100 yards and establish himself as the player of the future.

Williams has been compared to Alabama’s all-time top receivers, such as Julio Jones and Cooper. Although his style of play is more like to Cooper’s, he had a similar impact on Alabama football’s new age as did Jones when he joined the Crimson Tide in 2008.

Williams was a devoted Longhorn who left the Tide after head coach Nick Saban declared his retirement in January. After bringing the large fish back into the boat a few weeks later, Kalen DeBoer is already having a huge influence in Tuscaloosa.
