Following Week 3 contests, Alabama Football drops to No. 2 on the ESPN FPI.

Alabama football climbs to No. 2 in ESPN's FPI rankings

The Texas Longhorns, ranked No. 1, and Alabama Football, ranked No. 2, are the top two teams on the latest ESPN FPI, barely separated by a hair. Following their narrow escape in Lexington, the Georgia Bulldogs fell three spots to the fifth spot. Tennessee Volunteers are ranked No. 4, while Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked No. 3.

Ole Miss, ranked No. 6, Missouri, ranked No. 10, Oklahoma, ranked No. 14, Texas A&M, which moved up four spots to No. 15, and LSU, ranked No. 22, are the other SEC teams in the FPI Top 25. Auburn (No. 26), Arkansas (down six spots to No. 29), South Carolina (No. 33), Kentucky (up 16 spots to No. 39), Florida (No. 52), and Vanderbilt (No. 60) are the SEC clubs that are lagging behind.

ESPN’s FPI is an algorithm that is meant to get more accurate as the season goes on, unlike the human pollsters. Fans of Alabama football can rejoice about the Crimson Tide’s improved standing, but it usually takes the FPI algorithm half the regular season to gather sufficient game data to be trustworthy.

The reigning SEC champions are Alabama football and Texas Longhorns.
Texas and Alabama are the overwhelming favorites to win the SEC Championship Game, according to the most recent standings. The Longhorns are given a 35.7% chance by the FPI. Tennessee is at 13.1%, Ole Miss is at 15.1%, while Alabama football is at 22.9%. Following the Kentucky game, Georgia saw a sharp decline to a 7.8% chance of winning the SEC.
