The NCAA featured a number of intriguing matchups on Saturday as Kentucky attempted to upset the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia, ranked #1 in the nation, defeated Kentucky by a narrow margin, 13–12. Even though it was a close game, former Alabama coach Nick Saban won the play of the day because he was able to find his groove while watching Darius Rucker sing “Wagon Wheel.”

or any other college football fan, College GameDay is the ideal way to start a Saturday of football. College GameDay not only provides some context for the day’s contests but also generates some amusing exchanges and situations. And now that Saban is in the starting lineup, the coach’s wisdom is invaluable. However, Saban couldn’t resist busting out some dancing steps when Rucker appeared on stage for a special performance.

They, too, were impressed by Rucker’s renditions of “Wagon Wheel” and “Beers and Sunshine.” Selecting two of the greatest songs to play for college football, Saban disclosed his personal relationship to the popular tune. “We had karaoke every Saturday night at our house for recruiting, and ‘Wagon Wheel’ was the most requested song.”

When fans commented on the show, the majority of them mentioned how thrilled Saban was. Nick seems so at ease on game day, it’s amazing. Having him on game day is fantastic as I doubt anyone would witness this aspect of him. “This is the happiest Coach Saban has looked yet this season,” said a second commenter.

Although Rucker is well-known for performing the song, “Wagon Wheel” has a long history of collaboration with other bands. The song was written by the legendary Bob Dylan in collaboration with Ketch Secor in the 1970s. Groups like Old Crow Medicine Show witnessed the song’s platinum status throughout the ensuing decades.
