Following Tua Tagovailoa’s most recent concussion, $124 million is at risk.

Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, stated he thought about retiring following two concussions that kept him out of five games in the 2022 NFL season.
Rather, he came back to lead the NFL in passing yards and start every game for the Dolphins in 2023.
Tagovailoa left the game against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night due to yet another concussion. The former Alabama All-American has received advice from some in the media and NFL community to quit the game rather than take a chance on long-term harm, but according to NFL Network, Tagovailoa has no intention of doing so.
The quarterback Tagovailoa stated, “I love the game of football, and if I didn’t, I would have quit a long time ago,” in reference to his consideration of retiring after the 2022 campaign.
This time around, Tagovailoa’s decision will be influenced by more than just his passion for the game; money is at stake.
The Dolphins signed Tagovailoa to a four-year, $212.4 million contract deal following his breakout season in 2024; if he retires on his own volition, he will never get the majority of that money.
When Tagovailoa signed the contract, he was guaranteed a salary of $93.171 million, which included a signing bonus of $42 million, a salary of $1.125 million for the 2024 season, a salary of $25.046 million for the 2025 season, and a $25 million option bonus that was due between March 12 and 14, 2025.
The $50.046 million guarantee for 2025 would be worthless if Tagovailoa retired freely.
In addition, Tagovailoa’s deal contains $74 million in additional guaranteed funds.
