Kalen DeBoer, born on October 24, 1974, in Milbank, South Dakota, has risen from his small-town roots to become a prominent figure in college football. Raised in Milbank, he attended Milbank High School, where he began his football career. After a redshirt year at Western Washington University, DeBoer transferred to the University of Sioux Falls, where he played as a wide receiver from 1993 to 1996. During his tenure, he set school records with 234 receptions, 3,400 receiving yards, and 33 touchdowns, earning All-American honors in 1996.

After his playing career, DeBoer transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant at Washington High School in Sioux Falls. He then returned to the University of Sioux Falls as offensive coordinator from 2000 to 2004. In 2005, he became the head coach at Sioux Falls, leading the team to three NAIA national championships in 2006, 2008, and 2009.

DeBoer’s coaching journey continued with stints as offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, and Indiana. In 2020, he became the head coach at Fresno State, achieving a 9–3 record in the 2021 season. His success at Fresno State led to his appointment as head coach at the University of Washington in 2022, where he guided the Huskies to a Pac-12 Championship in 2023.

In 2024, DeBoer took on the role of head coach at the University of Alabama, succeeding the legendary Nick Saban. His tenure at Alabama has been marked by a strong start, with the team achieving a 9–4 record in his first season.

Throughout his career, DeBoer has remained connected to his hometown of Milbank. In December 2023, he was honored as the FBS Coach of the Year, a recognition that brought pride to Milbank.
