LEGENDARY TRIBUTE: Texas Longhorns to Unveil Statue of Earl Campbell at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium

Monumental Honor for the Heisman Trophy Winner and Longhorn Icon, Celebrating His Unmatched Legacy, Contributions to College Football, and Lasting Impact on the Program’s Historic Success

Austin, TX — In a moment of deep pride and reverence, the University of Texas will soon unveil a towering bronze statue of Earl Campbell—one of college football’s most revered figures—at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The tribute immortalizes the 1977 Heisman Trophy winner and Longhorns legend whose punishing running style, relentless spirit, and unforgettable performances left a permanent mark on the sport.

The statue, which will be revealed in a special ceremony this fall, will stand near the stadium’s main entrance, where generations of fans and athletes will walk past one of the most iconic players in NCAA history. Designed by acclaimed sculptor Brian Hanlon, the statue captures Campbell in full motion, bursting through defenders—an image that defined his career and thrilled Texas fans throughout the late 1970s.

“This is more than a statue—it’s a symbol of excellence, strength, and the heart of what it means to be a Longhorn,” said Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte. “Earl Campbell gave everything to this university, and his legacy still inspires every player who puts on the burnt orange.”

Known as the “Tyler Rose,” Campbell was born in Tyler, Texas, and quickly rose to stardom at the University of Texas, where he rushed for 4,443 yards and scored 40 touchdowns in just four seasons. His unforgettable 1977 campaign, which earned him the Heisman, saw him rush for 1,744 yards and 18 touchdowns, dominating defenses with his bruising style and breakaway speed. His achievements helped elevate the Texas Longhorns to national prominence and paved the way for a powerful football tradition.

After college, Campbell went on to have a Hall of Fame NFL career with the Houston Oilers, but his heart always remained in Austin. His influence extended beyond the field—through community work, mentoring young athletes, and championing causes related to spinal cord injury awareness after facing his own health challenges later in life.

The university has planned a celebration to coincide with the statue’s unveiling, including a tribute video, guest speakers, and appearances by former teammates, coaches, and fellow Heisman winners. Fans from across Texas and the country are expected to attend the event, marking it as one of the most significant tributes in Longhorns history.

“This honor means the world to me,” Campbell said in a statement. “The University of Texas gave me everything. I’m humbled that my story will live on in this way—for my family, my teammates, and every Longhorn fan.”

The statue will serve not only as a tribute to Campbell’s greatness but as a beacon for future generations—reminding all who enter the stadium of the legacy of one of the greatest to ever wear the Longhorns jersey.
