Date Reply Announced for the Commencement of the Project: Purdue to Honor Coach Matt Painter with Statue at Mackey Arena

Purdue University and the Boilermakers men’s basketball program have officially announced the commencement date for a landmark tribute to their iconic head coach, Matt Painter. In a significant move that underscores his profound impact on the university and the broader basketball community, Purdue will begin construction of a commemorative statue of Coach Painter this fall. The statue will be prominently placed at the main entrance plaza of Mackey Arena, serving as a lasting symbol of his contributions and legacy.

The official project start date has been set for September 10, 2025, with an unveiling ceremony scheduled to coincide with the start of the 2025-2026 basketball season. The announcement was made during a press conference held on campus, where university officials, athletic department representatives, and former players gathered to pay tribute to Painter’s long-standing commitment to the Boilermakers program.

Matt Painter, who took over as Purdue’s head coach in 2005, has been the cornerstone of a program known for excellence, discipline, and competitive spirit. Over his two-decade tenure, he has led the Boilermakers to numerous NCAA Tournament appearances, multiple Big Ten titles, and has helped develop a host of players who have gone on to successful professional careers. More than wins and accolades, however, it is his leadership, integrity, and dedication to student-athlete development that have made him a beloved figure within the Purdue community.

Athletic Director Mike Bobinski praised Painter’s enduring legacy during the announcement, saying, “Coach Painter has given so much to this university—not just in victories, but in building a culture of integrity, growth, and excellence. This statue is not only a symbol of his achievements but a tribute to the lives he has touched along the way.”

The statue project will be funded through a combination of university support and private donations, many of which have come from alumni and former players who credit Painter with shaping their lives both on and off the court. Designed by a nationally renowned sculptor, the statue will depict Coach Painter in a familiar courtside stance—clipboard in hand, focused and resolute—capturing his trademark intensity and leadership style.

Fans, students, and alumni are expected to participate in the unveiling event, which will also feature a video tribute, appearances by former Boilermakers stars, and special remarks from Coach Painter himself. The event will mark a new chapter in Purdue basketball history, reinforcing the program’s rich tradition while celebrating one of its most influential figures.

In the months leading up to the statue’s installation, Purdue plans to host a series of community engagement events, allowing fans to learn more about the project and share their own stories about Coach Painter’s impact.

As the September commencement date draws closer, excitement continues to build in West Lafayette and beyond. The statue promises not only to honor a coaching legend but to inspire future generations of Boilermakers who pass through the gates o

f Mackey Arena.
