Netflix releases "The Underdog" documentary about Drew Brees

In a highly anticipated collaboration between ESPN Films and Netflix, the streaming giant has officially announced the global release of *“Brees: Forged in Fire,”* a feature-length documentary chronicling the untold story of Drew Brees — Purdue’s most decorated football warrior. The film is set to premiere worldwide on August 12, 2025.

According to ESPN, *Brees: Forged in Fire* dives deep into the legacy, leadership, and unwavering loyalty of Drew Brees, one of college football’s most iconic quarterbacks and a Super Bowl-winning NFL legend. More than just a highlight reel of his athletic career, the film is a powerful exploration of grit, character, and the indomitable spirit of the Purdue Boilermakers.

The story begins in the late 1990s with Brees’ unlikely recruitment journey. Overlooked by most major college football programs due to his height and lack of elite measurables, Brees, a native of Austin, Texas, was far from a blue-chip prospect. Yet Purdue saw what others missed. The film traces how a young, underestimated athlete found his home in West Lafayette and transformed into a national star — a journey marked by perseverance, discipline, and unshakable belief.

Narrated by Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey and directed by Emmy Award-winner Jonathan Hock, the documentary features interviews with former coaches, teammates, and family members, along with never-before-seen footage from Brees’ college and NFL years. The film sheds new light on Brees’ battles with adversity — including career-threatening injuries, public criticism, and moments of self-doubt — that ultimately shaped his leadership style and lifelong commitment to excellence.

The documentary pays tribute to Brees’ record-shattering career at Purdue, where he led the Boilermakers to a Big Ten Championship and their first Rose Bowl appearance in over three decades. From the locker room speeches to the unforgettable game-winning drives, *Brees: Forged in Fire* captures the emotional highs and lows that defined his time in black and gold.

Viewers will also see how Brees carried the Boilermaker spirit into the NFL, where he overcame a devastating shoulder injury to lead the New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl victory. But at its core, the film is about more than football — it’s about loyalty to one’s roots, the price of greatness, and the making of a leader.

In an early press release, Brees shared his thoughts: “This film means a lot to me, not just because it tells my story, but because it represents every kid who was told they weren’t good enough. Purdue gave me a chance. This is a story about what happens when someone believes in you — and when you start to believe in yourself.”

*“Brees: Forged in Fire”* is expected to be a landmark sports documentary, offering an inspiring look at one of football’s most enduring figures. With its official global release on Netflix set for August 12, fans, athletes, and dreamers everywhere will get to experience the full story behind a quarterback forged not just in competition — but in fire.
