Nick Saban Pays School Fees for 103 Students to Join 3rd Annual Summer Reading Challenge

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban is known across the country for building one of college football’s most dominant dynasties. But this summer, it’s not about championships — it’s about changing lives through reading.

On Monday, Saban announced that he and his wife, Terry Saban, through their Nick’s Kids Foundation, are covering the school fees for 103 students across Alabama to join the 3rd Annual Summer Reading Challenge, an initiative aimed at improving literacy and fostering a love of reading among young students.

“For us, it’s always been about more than football,” Saban said at a press conference held at the University of Alabama. “Helping kids grow, learn, and believe in their potential — that’s something we take seriously.”

The Summer Reading Challenge, first launched in 2023, encourages students from elementary through high school to read at least 10 books over the summer. Participants receive access to reading materials, weekly group activities, and educational support, all designed to help them stay engaged while school is out.

This year’s program saw a record number of applicants, many from low-income families who could not afford the participation fees. That’s where the Sabans stepped in.

“Coach Saban didn’t hesitate,” said Carla Jenkins, director of the reading program. “He asked how many students needed help, and then he covered all 103. It was that simple. That generous.”

For many families, Saban’s donation was more than just a financial relief — it was a game-changer.

“My son had never owned a book before this program,” said Tanisha Rowe, a parent from Birmingham. “Now, he’s reading every night. And knowing Coach Saban believed in him enough to pay for him to be part of this? That lit a fire in him.”

Saban, who often emphasizes education and personal growth in his coaching philosophy, has long supported youth programs in Alabama. Through Nick’s Kids Foundation, he and Terry have helped fund schools, build libraries, and sponsor scholarships across the state.

“Reading is a fundamental skill,” Saban said. “It’s the foundation for everything — not just in school, but in life. If we want our kids to succeed, we’ve got to make sure they can read, learn, and grow.”

The Summer Reading Challenge will run through early August, concluding with a celebration event featuring Crimson Tide players, educators, and community leaders. Organizers say the Sabans’ contribution will not only help students this summer but also inspire more involvement in years to come.

As always, Coach Saban is proving that leadership goes beyond the sidelines.
