Everything Nick Saban Said  about Ty Simpson after being named Alabama QB starter

Even in retirement, Nick Saban’s words still carry weight in Tuscaloosa. Following offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s decision to name Ty Simpson as Alabama’s starting quarterback for the 2025 season, the legendary former head coach offered his thoughts on Simpson’s rise to QB1 — and he didn’t hold back.

Speaking to reporters at a Crimson Tide alumni event in Birmingham, Saban gave a measured, candid assessment of Simpson, the junior quarterback who had been locked in a fierce competition with Julian Sayin and Dylan Lonergan during spring and fall camp.

### On Simpson’s Growth and Work Ethic

Saban began by acknowledging Simpson’s persistence:

> “Ty’s been in that room for a few years now, and I’ll give him credit — he stuck with it. In this day and age of the transfer portal, a lot of guys would’ve left. He didn’t. He put his head down, kept grinding, and earned the opportunity. That says something about his character.”

### On Simpson’s Strengths

When asked what specifically stands out about Simpson’s game, Saban highlighted athleticism and playmaking ability:

> “Ty’s athletic. He can move in the pocket, extend plays, and he’s got the arm talent to make every throw on the field. That’s never been in question. What it’s always come down to is consistency and decision-making.”

He continued:

> “He’s made strides there. From what I’ve seen this spring and summer, he’s making quicker reads, trusting the offense more. That’s what you need to run a system like what Coach Grubb is trying to install.”

### On Concerns with Simpson

But Saban didn’t sugarcoat his concerns, either — especially when it came to ball security and pressure situations.

> “Look, Ty’s biggest challenge has always been decision-making under pressure. He’s got to avoid trying to do too much. One bad throw in the SEC can flip a game. We’ve talked about that. That’s where leadership and maturity come in.”

### On Julian Sayin Still Being a Factor

Saban also addressed the buzz around five-star sophomore Julian Sayin, whom many expected to win the job.

> “Julian’s an extremely talented young man. Just because he didn’t win the job right now doesn’t mean he won’t be a big part of this team. Competition’s never over at Alabama. I’ve always said that. You earn it every week.”

### On Trusting the Coaching Staff

Though he’s no longer on the headset, Saban made it clear he supports Grubb’s decision — even if it surprised some.

> “Coach Grubb sees those guys every day. He’s got to go with the guy he believes gives the team the best chance to win right now. That’s what being a coach is. I respect that.”

### Final Thoughts

Saban closed his comments with a reminder of what being the Alabama quarterback truly means:

> “It’s not just about making plays. It’s about leading the team, being accountable, and setting the tone. That’s the responsibility that comes with that position here. I think Ty understands that now better than he ever has. Now it’s about proving it on Saturdays.”
