**Former UNC Basketball Coach Roy Williams “Proud” to Be a Part of Effort to Provide Debt Relief for Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts**
Former University of North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams has added his voice and support to a new initiative aimed at helping families recover from the long-term financial burdens caused by Hurricane Helene. The Category 4 storm, which devastated parts of the southeastern United States, left thousands of residents grappling with costly repairs, lost income, and mounting debt. Years later, many are still struggling to regain financial stability.
Williams, a Hall of Fame coach known for his leadership both on and off the court, recently joined a coalition of community leaders, non-profits, and philanthropic organizations working together to erase medical and housing-related debt incurred in the aftermath of the hurricane. The initiative, called “Helene Relief Now,” focuses on providing direct financial aid and debt forgiveness to families who were hardest hit by the storm.
“This is about more than just money—it’s about dignity and giving people their lives back,” Williams said during a press conference on Tuesday. “So many folks lost everything, and they’re still trying to rebuild. If we can lift some of that burden, even just a little, it can make a world of difference.”
Williams, who retired from coaching in 2021 after leading the Tar Heels to three national championships, has long been active in charitable efforts across North Carolina. His involvement in the Helene Relief Now project adds a familiar and trusted voice to the campaign, helping to boost awareness and attract donations.
According to organizers, the initiative has already secured over $5 million in pledged support, and they’re working to double that amount through public-private partnerships and individual contributions. Relief efforts include paying off medical debt, providing grants to small business owners impacted by the storm, and assisting with home repairs for low-income residents.
“For Coach Williams to be involved means a lot to the communities we’re trying to reach,” said project director Lena Alvarez. “He’s someone people respect and look up to—not just because of basketball, but because of his heart.”
In addition to raising funds, Williams has committed to participating in several upcoming community events and town hall meetings aimed at spreading awareness about available resources. He emphasized the importance of long-term recovery efforts and said he hopes the initiative will serve as a model for future disaster responses.
“I’m proud to be a part of this,” Williams said. “This is my home, and I believe in taking care of our neighbors. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but together, we can make a real difference.”
The Helene Relief Now initiative is expected to continue through the end of next year, with updates and impact reports released quarterly to ensure transparency and accountability. Those interested in contributing or applying for aid can find more information on the program’s official website.
