Cardinals Acquire Former Astros Fireballer To Strengthen Depth Within Organization

The Cardinals’ 2023 season was undoubtedly a complete bust, and in response, the team added some elite players while also strengthening its organizational depth with big-league experience.

The club’s largest problem from the previous season was St. Louis’ starting rotation, but the bullpen also didn’t help the team.

The Cardinals added another Friday to their already impressive roster. Josh James, a former pitcher for the Houston Astros, was formally signed by St. Louis to a minor league contract, the team said.

“We have signed (right-handed pitcher) Josh James to a minor league contract for the 2024 season,” the organization announced. “James, 30, appeared in 87 games with Houston (including 14 postseason games) from 2018-21 and has struck out 13.3 batters per 9 IP over his (Major League Baseball) career.”

Despite having a 4.64 ERA across his 73 big league outings, James has a fastball that can reach speeds of over 100 mph. The majority of his season was spent in the minor leagues, with just five big league appearances with Houston last season.
