According to ESPN Report: Historical Moves as Former Purdue Basketball Legend Glenn Robinson Donates $66.21 Million to Matt Painter for New Stadium Project, Says “Boilermakers Pride Lives Within Me Wherever I Go”

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — In a move that is being hailed as one of the most generous in college basketball history, former Purdue basketball legend Glenn Robinson has donated a staggering $66.21 million to support head coach Matt Painter’s new stadium project. The announcement, confirmed Monday by ESPN, has electrified the Purdue community and reignited pride in Boilermaker basketball nationwide.

Robinson, affectionately known as “The Big Dog,” made the official announcement during a surprise appearance at a Purdue fundraising gala. Dressed in a black and gold blazer, the two-time All-American took the podium and addressed a crowd filled with alumni, donors, and current players.

> “Boilermaker pride is something you never outgrow,” Robinson said. “It’s with me when I wake up, when I walk into arenas, and even when I talk to my own kids about what it means to commit to something bigger than yourself. Today, I’m committing to this university once again — with $66.21 million for the future of Purdue basketball.”

The donation will go directly toward the construction of a new, state-of-the-art basketball arena, planned to break ground in 2026. According to Coach Painter, the facility will include expanded training resources, improved fan seating, a dedicated hall of fame wing, and new technological integrations to enhance game-day experiences.

“This isn’t just about brick and mortar,” said Coach Matt Painter. “It’s about legacy. It’s about honoring the past while building a foundation for the future. Glenn’s gift is more than money — it’s a message to every recruit, fan, and player: Purdue basketball matters.”

Robinson starred for the Boilermakers from 1992 to 1994, averaging over 27 points per game and leading the team to an Elite Eight appearance. His No. 13 jersey hangs in the rafters at Mackey Arena, and his professional career with the Milwaukee Bucks and other NBA teams remains an inspiration to many.

“I remember walking through Mackey as a kid and dreaming of what greatness looked like,” Robinson added. “Now I want every young Boilermaker to walk into that new arena and dream even bigger.”

The $66.21 million figure is symbolic, according to insiders close to the former NBA star. The number reflects both his Purdue scoring average and a nod to his son, Glenn Robinson III, who wore No. 1 for the Boilermakers and now plays professionally.

Reactions to the news have poured in across social media and the sports world. ESPN analysts called the donation “one of the most emotional and meaningful contributions in college basketball history.” Purdue President Mung Chiang praised Robinson as “a true example of leadership, character, and Boilermaker spirit.”

With this donation, Purdue not only moves closer to realizing its ambitious athletic vision — it also strengthens its identity as a program rooted in pride, legacy, and unwavering commitment.

As Glenn Robinson concluded in his speech, “I left the hardwood years ago, but I never left Purdue. And I never will.”
