This was a different setting from the glimmering lights of Anfield. Last summer, I was in Hungary, sitting in the press section of the Nandor Hidegkuti Stadium in Budapest. It was the U17 European Championship, and I am convinced I was watching a star being born.
During my career I have seen plenty of players make their mark in this tournament. From Dominik Szoboszlai scoring a last-minute winner against Erling Haaland’s Norway back in 2017 to watching Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho lighting up the show for England. The U17 European Championship is simply the tournament to announce yourself on the biggest stage for aspiring young footballers.
And during the 2023 tournament hosted in Hungary, there was a clear star, who did exactly that. Who I was so convinced by, I now want him to one day replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool. He was simply very special. The kind of talent you don’t really see often. The kind of talent who already had the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and put fans on the edge of their seats.
