Stevens received three Academic All-America nominations and was named to the all-conference team.

 

After leaving his job at Eli Lilly and Company, he went into coaching, becoming a volunteer assistant for the Butler University basketball team in time for the 2000-01 season. The following year, Stevens was

 

promoted to assistant coach for the varsity team. On April 4, 2007, he took over as head coach, succeeding Todd Lickliter, who had held the position for five years before leaving to lead the Iowa

Hawkeyes. Stevens earned the third-youngest Division I NCAA coach with 30 victories in his first season at Butler.
