Tottenham Hotspur suffered a nightmare start to their Premier League campaign on Saturday, losing 3–0 away to Brentford in a result that immediately raised questions about the club’s new-look squad and their ambitions for the season.
But while Spurs supporters were left disappointed by what happened on the pitch, attention quickly turned toward Xavi Simons and his social-media activity.
Simons was not involved in the match. The Tottenham midfielder remains sidelined following the serious ACL injury he suffered last season, meaning he could only watch from the sidelines as his teammates struggled against a determined Brentford side. Tottenham had already confirmed that Simons underwent surgery and began his rehabilitation after rupturing his ACL.
That absence made the situation even more interesting.
Before the Brentford match, Simons had already been generating plenty of attention online. His social-media activity had recently been linked to Tottenham’s pursuit of his former PSV teammate Savinho, with reports suggesting that his posts and interactions had fueled excitement among Spurs supporters.
After Tottenham’s disappointing performance, however, fans were naturally watching closely to see whether the Dutch international would have anything to say.
The defeat itself was difficult for Tottenham to explain away. Brentford were the better side for large periods, and the final scoreline reflected their dominance. Lewis-Potter and Sangaré played important roles as the hosts produced an emphatic victory, while Tottenham’s expensive summer rebuild suddenly looked far less convincing than it had on paper.
For Brentford supporters, the result was a moment to celebrate. Tottenham had entered the new campaign with enormous expectations following a major spending spree, but Brentford showed that big transfer fees mean very little once the ball starts rolling.
That is why any reaction from one of Tottenham’s biggest stars was always going to attract attention.
Simons has become an important figure at Spurs despite his current absence. Last season, before his injury, he recorded five goals and six assists in 41 appearances, underlining why Tottenham supporters are eager to see him return to full fitness.
His return could therefore become one of the biggest boosts Tottenham receive during the campaign.
For now, though, Spurs have to deal with the reality of starting the season with a heavy defeat.
The loss also gives Brentford supporters plenty to talk about. Their team did not simply scrape a victory; they produced a performance that exposed several weaknesses in Tottenham’s new-look side. Reuters described the result as a 3–0 drubbing and noted that Tottenham’s major summer spending failed to hide familiar shortcomings.
That is what makes Simons’ situation so intriguing.
While fans may want to interpret every social-media move from a high-profile player as a message, it is important to separate confirmed information from speculation. There is currently no reliable evidence that Simons posted a message accusing Brentford, blaming the result on anything unusual, or suggesting that Brentford’s victory should somehow be questioned.
What is clear is that Tottenham have plenty to fix.
The club invested heavily during the summer, supporters expected a completely different Spurs side, and the opening-day defeat has immediately increased the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi and his players.
Brentford, meanwhile, can enjoy the victory.
And perhaps the biggest question now is not what Simons supposedly meant, but what Tottenham will do next.
When the Dutch midfielder eventually returns, Spurs supporters will hope his presence can provide the creativity and attacking quality that was missing against Brentford.
Until then, the 3–0 defeat will remain a painful reminder that winning the transfer window does not guarantee winning football matches.
And after such a dramatic opening weekend, everyone will be watching Tottenham’s next move.
