Martin O’Neill is facing growing questions over his Celtic squad after the Hoops suffered a damaging 3–0 defeat to Rangers in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final at Ibrox.
The result was one of Celtic’s most disappointing performances of the campaign, with Rangers dominating large periods of the contest and eventually securing a comfortable victory through goals from Dan Neil and Kevin Kelsy. The defeat also ended Celtic’s hopes of defending their League Cup crown.
However, claims circulating around the aftermath of the match have added another layer of drama, with suggestions that O’Neill could take strong action against a Celtic star following an alleged disagreement over a substitution.
At present, there is no reliable confirmation that O’Neill has terminated any player’s contract because of the incident. Likewise, reports confirming that a Celtic player outright refused to be substituted have not emerged from the credible sources covering the match. Those claims should therefore be treated as speculation rather than established fact.
What is clear is that O’Neill was deeply disappointed with the performance. Rangers controlled the second half, while Celtic struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities. The Hoops managed only one shot on target, underlining just how difficult the afternoon became for the visitors.
O’Neill had already made a major change at half-time, replacing Sebastian Tounekti with Haissem Hassan. The alteration was an attempt to inject more attacking quality into the Celtic side, but it failed to change the overall direction of the contest.
Rangers continued to dominate after the interval and eventually doubled their advantage through Kelsy before Neil completed his brace with an outstanding finish from the edge of the Celtic penalty area.
For O’Neill, the defeat was particularly concerning because Celtic had entered the game in excellent domestic form. They had won their opening league matches and had also defeated St Johnstone 1–0 only days before travelling to Ibrox.
The Celtic manager subsequently described the defeat as a wake-up call and admitted that his team had been outplayed. He also acknowledged that the experience should serve as a learning opportunity ahead of another Old Firm meeting at Celtic Park.
That response will now place the spotlight firmly on his squad selection.
The next few days could be particularly important for players who failed to perform at Ibrox. O’Neill has already shown that he is prepared to make difficult decisions, and the Rangers defeat could accelerate changes to his starting XI.
One of the biggest concerns is Celtic’s attacking performance. The side struggled to maintain possession, failed to build sustained pressure and found it difficult to cope with Rangers’ intensity. The second half was especially uncomfortable, with Rangers repeatedly threatening to extend their advantage.
O’Neill’s comments after the match suggested that he does not intend to ignore what happened. Rather than blaming one individual, he indicated that the entire team must learn from the experience.

That fixture gives O’Neill the perfect opportunity to respond.
A dramatic turnaround would quickly change the mood surrounding Celtic, while another poor performance would inevitably increase pressure on the manager and his players.
For now, however, the claim that O’Neill has terminated a Celtic star’s contract should not be reported as official. The confirmed story is already serious enough: Rangers produced a commanding 3–0 victory, Celtic were eliminated from the competition, and O’Neill has admitted that his team must learn from a painful Old Firm defeat.
The coming days will reveal whether that lesson results in major changes inside the Celtic dressing room.
