Premier League Releases Official Statement on Kevin Danso’s Red Card After Sunderland Defeat as Paul Merson Claims Spark Debate

The Premier League has explained the controversial moment involving Sunderland defender Kevin Danso after his dismissal during the Black Cats’ 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth, a decision that immediately became one of the major talking points following Sunday’s encounter.

Danso was sent off in the 17th minute at the Vitality Stadium on October 18, 2026, after bringing down Bournemouth striker Evanilson when the Brazilian forward was through on goal. The decision was checked by VAR and upheld, leaving Sunderland to play most of the match with ten men.

The incident has fuelled discussions about refereeing standards and the application of the rules, particularly among supporters who believe such decisions can dramatically change the outcome of an important Premier League fixture.

Premier League explains the VAR decision

In its official Matchweek 7 VAR review, the Premier League Match Centre confirmed that the referee’s decision to send Danso off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity had been checked and upheld by VAR.

The explanation stated that Evanilson had possession of the ball before being pulled to the ground by Danso outside the penalty area. The officials therefore supported the straight red card shown by referee Craig Pawson.

Although Paul Merson’s name has been attached to the controversy in the proposed headline, I could not verify a specific statement from him about this incident.

How the red card changed the match

Sunderland had already fallen behind in the sixth minute when Marcus Tavernier headed Bournemouth into the lead after Evanilson created the opportunity.

Danso’s dismissal eleven minutes later made Sunderland’s task considerably more difficult. The defender had failed to control a long ball, allowing Evanilson to get goal-side before the Sunderland player brought him down.

The Black Cats were forced to reorganise their defence and midfield, leaving them with limited opportunities to get back into the contest. Bournemouth took advantage shortly after half-time, when Evanilson capitalised on another defensive mistake to score in the 48th minute.

The hosts continued to create chances, while Sunderland struggled to produce a meaningful attacking response. Bournemouth eventually secured a 2-0 victory, giving manager Marco Rose his first Premier League win with the club.

Sunderland face fresh pressure

The defeat intensified the pressure on Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris, whose side had now suffered four consecutive league losses.

Le Bris admitted that his team had performed below expectations and described the afternoon as painful. His assessment reflected the frustration surrounding a match in which early defensive mistakes and the red card made recovery extremely difficult.

Danso’s suspension also presents Sunderland with another problem ahead of their next league fixture against Leeds United. His absence means the coaching staff must consider alternative defensive options while attempting to halt the club’s disappointing run.
